Adult psoriasis is an uncomfortable and unpredictable skin condition characterized by red, itchy patches and silvery scales. There is no cure, but emerging treatment approaches are proving to be effective in managing the condition.
Understanding adult psoriasis
With adult psoriasis, the skin cells multiply more quickly than they should. This causes a buildup of skin cells on the surface, in the form of raised, red plaques and white scales.
The disease tends to come and go, with various periods of remissions and flare-ups. And although it is harmless and not contagious, there can be a stigma involved for some patients because psoriasis can be so disfiguring.
Psoriasis causes + triggers
The majority of the current research indicates that adult psoriasis is caused by an inherited abnormality in the immune system. The condition very commonly runs in families.
Once you’re diagnosed with psoriasis, a number of outside factors can trigger a flare-up or aggravate the condition, including:
- Stress
- Heavy alcohol use
- Trauma
- Injured skin
- Streptococcal Infection
- Smoking
- Certain medications
Current Treatment Options
Topical medications
Creams and ointments can effectively treat mild to moderate psoriasis for many patients. These approaches include corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, anthralin, salicylic acid and coal tar, among others.
Light Therapy
If your psoriasis covers a large portion of your body, light therapy may be recommended. This approach exposes the affected area with artificial or natural ultraviolet light.
Oral + injected medications
Severe psoriasis is often treated with oral or injected medications. Many of these solutions have side effects, so they are typically only prescribed for brief periods or once alternative treatment approaches have failed.
